Grade 6 Responses

A grade six class was asked, "What would you do to solve the literacy issue?"

Here are some of the answers:

  • Rent the town hall for three nights a week so people can come and learn to read.

  • We would stay on that lesson until everyone understands. It may take all year or even more.

  • Put up my number or put up flyers or put some ads in a magazine and the children or adults can come to my house and I can read to them.

  • I would help them until they master it (reading and writing).

  • Family literacy - reading to your kid.

  • These schools would have a free read day. They will be open to the public for personal and family reading. There would be inside and outside reading.

  • If everyone could help others learn to read then the world would be so much better.

  • Have a tutor in every neighborhood that is easy to reach.

  • Every night before bedtime, read a story about your family.

  • Literacy is extremely important in life. If you can't read the signs that you drive past, or spell your name, how are you going to survive? Reading is an extreme privilege.

  • I would help the kids or my own parents read or even write properly; then they will be treated like everyone else is treated - like they are in the family.

  • My family knows how to read and write and I'm very proud of it. That's how my family is and it is brilliant!

  • I'd set up a free class to help adults and seniors plus school dropouts learn these two vital skills (reading and writing) so they can go farther in life. Finally, I'd ask anyone with the knowledge of language arts to share that knowledge with everyone they know who is illiterate.

  • I would try to help him to read and write so he could live a more normal life.

  • If the children or adults have trouble reading and spelling they can continue to sign out different books and it will eventually increase their education level until they are ready to read and spell by themselves.
